Overview
Palgrave
Brown can assist you in obtaining EcoHome
credits without additional cost with
its engineered timber solutions in 2
ways:
1. Environmental
Impact of Materials
Aim: To
encourage the use of materials that
have less impact on the environment,
taking account of the full life-cycle.
With 7.25%
of the total credits available from
this section and only 4% from the responsible
sourcing of materials it is more important
to use the right material in the construction
than it is to source it responsibly.
Credits
are achieved by obtaining an ‘A’
rating from the Green Guide to Housing
Specification, for 80% by area of the
element.

Roof
Pitched
roof structure. A timber structure
is A rated and the Green Guide
states that “trussed rafters use almost
30% less timber than traditional cut
rafters, reducing the environmental
impact of the roof structure”.

The Green
Guide states Cedar is imported from
the west coast of Canada giving the
freight transport impacts it only gets
a B rating.
Internal
Walls
Palgrave
Brown recommends the A rated
timber studwork partition walls.
Floors
Concrete
Ground Floor Solution. The only
A rating for a concrete ground
floor is plywood decking on timber battens
with insulation on beam and block flooring.
The Green
Guide states “ Chipboard and OSB both
utilise waste timber from other processes,
however they require greater proportions
of energy intensive resins and processing
than plywood. Plywood is often produced
from tropical hardwoods and care should
be taken to ensure that these have been
sustainably grown. Tongue and groove
softwood floorboards have comparatively
little processing and perform well.”
Palgrave
Brown recommends either
softwood (spruce) plywood with TG4 profile
in 2400 x 600 sheets for flooring, or
tongue and groove softwood floorboards.
Suspended
timber ground floors. These rate
much higher and decking with either
plywood of softwood boards gets an
A rating.
Upper
Floors. Palgrave Brown recommends
the only A rated solution that is
timber joists decked with spruce plywood.
Windows
Palgrave
Brown offers the only A rated
solution, a pre treated softwood frame
double glazed, painted inside and out.
This is fully finished in the factory
so it can be installed quickly on site
and the paint finishes are warranted.
