MDF -
Fitting Guide
|
SILKTRIM MDF Mouldings may be fixed in a
similar way to Softwood mouldings, although there is no need to allow for shrinkage, or to
cross-nail mitred joints. Also, the added advantage of long lengths will greatly reduce
the number of joints required.
Nailing
SILKTRIM can be nailed in a similar manner to Softwood mouldings. 'Lost-head'
nails are preferred as these will reduce the need for filling and therefore reduce
finishing time, These should be spaced at a maximum 600mm centres.
When nailing into lightweight block, the use of spiral or helical nails is
recommended, alternatively masonry nails angled in opposing horizontal directions can also
be used
Tip - To reduce the need for filling, where possible nail into the 'root' of the
profile, although when fixing taller sections a base fixing may also be required.
Screw Fixing
SILKTRIM can be fixed using screws and wallplugs, although it is recommended
that parallel threaded screws threaded to the head of the screw in pre-drilled pilot holes
be used.
Adhesives
SILKTRIM may be fixed using adhesives on dry lined walls or in any situation
where the walls are true. The raw material for SILKTRIM is wood fibre and therefore most
general purpose high performance adhesives will be suitable. However, adhesive
manufacturers should be consulted, with regard to suitability of their products to high
humidity situations.
Filling
Nitrocellulose or any good quality non-water based Filler should
be used to cover any fixing holes.
Storage
Although mini-packs are supplied spiralwrapped it is recommended that SILKTRIM
be stored in dry conditions,
Conditioning
It is recommended that SILKTRIM mouldings are allowed to remain in the area of
fixing for approximately 24 hours before use.
Cut Ends
Ends that are cut or notched on site should be resealed using primer/sealer or
varnish.
Packaging
SILKTRIM profiles that are 75mm wide and below are spiral wrapped into mini
packs of 10 pcs, and profiles 100mm-150mm are wrapped into mini packs of 5 pcs. 175mm
sections are wrapped into mini packs of 3 pcs
