Palgrave Brown, the £66 million UK timber engineering company, has enjoyed global coverage by featuring prominently in this year’s Oxford v. Cambridge Boat Race.
Around 7.6 million viewers in the UK and an estimated global audience of over 120 million in 180 countries saw the name Palgrave Brown emblazoned on the winning Oxford boat as it powered to victory in the154th annual boat race.
In fact, the boat was named in honour of Alan and Alastair Palgrave-Brown, twin brothers who both coxed for Oxford around the time of the Second World War and whose family went on to become benefactors of the University Boat Club.
The Palgrave-Browns’ family business was a timber importer and merchant based in Norfolk and when today’s company was selecting an identity to reflect the expertise it was able to draw on from among its corporate group, Palgrave Brown was viewed as the name with the best-known heritage.
Steve Pinner, operations director at Palgrave Brown, explains: “The national and international exposure we’ve had as a result of the boat’s name must be worth millions! We’re pleased that Palgrave Brown’s established tradition of timber expertise lives on and are extremely proud to have this association with the famous Boat Race.”
The Boat Race is one of the most prestigious and longest-running events in the UK sporting calendar, having first been held back in 1829, and is seen as marking the start of the English ‘social season’. The international class eight boats used for the race weigh 96kg (211lbs) and are 19.9m (62ft) long, and although the shells were traditionally made from wood, they are now generally made from carbon fibre and materials such as Kevlar.

| 29/02/2008 GRAND
DESIGNS FOR PALGRAVE BROWN |
Posi-Joists from
Palgrave Brown, the £66
million UK timber
engineering company, have
featured on Channel 4’s
popular Grand Designs TV
show in a £725,000 project
in Bristol known as the
Sugar Cube house.
Martin Pease, a commercial
architect, designed his
‘sugar cube’ open plan dream
home for his wife Katherine,
two children and two dogs,
with everything in white.
The steel and timber frame
project was completed on
budget – land costs of
£425,000 and build costs of
£350,000 – and with a rapid
build time of just under a
month.
Unusually, due to the nature
of the design, Posi-Joists
were incorporated placed
vertically as well as
horizontally for the floor
and roof support and
Palgrave Brown designers
assisted with the design and
unusual application of the
Posi-Joists.
Dave Atkins, product manager
for Posi-Joist at Palgrave
Brown, comments: “The Sugar
Cube is a great project to
demonstrate the product’s
versatility, and we are
delighted that Palgrave
Brown’s design service was
able to give the customer
the design flexibility he
wanted.”
Exeter-based Westructure
Timber Frame (01392 411211,
www.westructure.co.uk) used
Martin’s ideas and design to
produce detailed drawings
and a CAD 3D image to take
in the structural,
environmental and conceptual
requirements and specified
Posi-Joists. Peter Doman,
managing director at
Westructure, explains: “This
was the first time we’d used
Posi-Joists in vertical
alignment. It meant we could
have large ceilinged rooms
as well as fulfil Martin’s
vision of wide open spaces.”
The highly-insulated Sugar
Cube four-bedroomed home is
virtually all open plan, and
half the ground floor space
has double height ceilings.
To add to the light and
spacious feel, the house
also features a full height
glass wall overlooking the
garden.
The Posi-Joist system,
available from Palgrave
Brown, combines timber and a
Posi-Strut steel web which
means it can span far
greater distances than
alternative products.
Because the Posi-Joist also
eliminates the need for load
bearing intermediate walls
it is ideal for a variety of
internal room layouts,
giving design flexibility,
while its fixing surface
makes for a truly quiet
floor.
The Posi-Joist, which is
both lightweight and strong,
is easy to fit with
trimmable ends and its open
web design makes it ideal
for discreetly installing
services without the need
for sawing gaps. Palgrave
Brown, with 17 national
network sites, has Posi-Joist
manufacturing capacity and
Posi-Joist designers at its
branches in Widnes, Yeovil
and Boston, as well as a
sales and central design
office at the Nuneaton
office.

31/01/2008 - DOUBLE AWARD RECOGNITION FOR PALGRAVE
BROWN
Palgrave Brown, the UK’s £66 million leading engineered timber specialist, has helped two developer customers to pick up regional awards in the National House-Building Council’s (NHBC) annual Pride in the Job awards. The awards went to the site managers of two projects in the South West, in Exeter and Devizes. The Exeter project was a C G Fry & Son Ltd. mixed development of houses, apartments and some social housing, while the Devizes project was a McCarthy & Stone retirement housing project.
The Yeovil branch of Palgrave Brown worked closely with the developers’ site managers to ensure trouble-free delivery of timber supplies as and when they were required, with flooring supplied to the Exeter site and trusses to the Devizes site. This level of partnership supports the project by avoiding holding stock on site, while offering flexibility so that any changes to requirements can easily be accommodated.
NHBC set up its 'Pride in the Job' (PIJ) competition in 1980 to seek out the UK's best site managers and reward them for creating quality, beautifully finished new homes. The drive for quality is at the heart of the prestigious awards, which focus on the day-to-day operation of the building site and the work of the site manager.
Nick Fricker, general manager at Palgrave Brown Yeovil, comments, “Our team is extremely pleased to have contributed to the success of our developer partners. The work that the NHBC does to raise standards in the housing construction industry is recognised nationwide and to have two of the projects to which we have contributed win an award is an excellent endorsement of Palgrave Brown’s complete ‘on time, every time’ reputation.
“The awards acknowledge not just excellence in materials but also the contribution to performance of individual site managers and we regard these support services to be an equally important part of our total offering,” he continues.
Palgrave Brown has the engineered timber industry’s widest and most comprehensive product portfolio, including roof trusses, SIPS, MDF mouldings, stairs, and doors, as well as being a distributor for the i-Level Silent Floor System.

19/12/2007 - POSIJOIST
PROLIFERATION AT PALGRAVE
BROWN
Palgrave Brown, the UK’s £66 million leading engineered timber specialist, is continuing to invest in growth with the creation of a new PosiJoist manufacturing facility at its Boston branch. The company now has three specialist PosiJoist production sites within the company’s 17 branch national network to give true national coverage.
A MiTek PosiJoist Strut-Runner and a splice press have been installed at Boston to boost existing PosiJoist production capacity and to offer even shorter lead times for customers located in the east of the country.
“The growing demand for open web flooring systems means that PosiJoist is booming,” comments Steve Pinner, group operations director at Palgrave Brown. “It’s an extremely stable product, ideal for new build, and because it’s open web it saves time and hassle on site, making faster build times possible. The new facility means that we’re now able to offer customers nationwide lead times as short as two weeks.”
The expansion builds on last year’s investment in new PosiJoist capacity at Palgrave Brown’s Yeovil and Widnes branches, with PosiJoist designers at each site and a new sales and central design office at Nuneaton.
The PosiJoist system is the latest generation of flooring systems within the building industry and combines timber and Posi-Strut steel web that allows for a span of far greater distances while allowing a variety of internal room layouts within an external shell. The open web design also provides concealed piping for contractors without the need for sawing gaps, as in traditional flooring methods. The design, size and flexibility of the PosiJoist system means that it can also be used to span flat and pitched roofs.
Palgrave Brown has the engineered timber industry’s widest and most comprehensive product portfolio, including roof trusses, SIPS panels, stairs, doors, cladding and MDF mouldings, as well as being a Master Dealer for the TJI Silent Floor System. Because complete integrated floor-to-roof timber solutions can be sold, designed and delivered from one location, housebuilder and developer customers benefit from cost savings and reduced impact on the environment, as well as excellent service on time, every time.

02/11/2007 - PALGRAVE BROWN IS QUICK
ON THE DRAW IN THE DEEP
SOUTH
Palgrave Brown, the £66
million UK timber
engineering company, has
helped a Southampton
developer achieve a build
time of just 14 weeks for
eight flats, using the
Palgrave Brown SIPS building
system.
The development stands on a
brownfield site surrounded
by gardens on all sides,
close to Southampton Water.
There were unsightly
derelict warehouses and
garages there previously,
but developer Wheatshield
Ltd has used the space to
create a landscaped
development of eight
one-bedroom homes, cleverly
designed to look like four
houses.
Palgrave Brown worked
closely with Wheatshield on
the specification of
materials, and supplied a
comprehensive suite of
products including roof
trusses, spandrel panels,
flooring and TJI joists,
staircases, and all internal
walls as well as the SIPS
system for the
first-time-buyer
development.
Wheatshield director Scott
Pinnick comments, “Even
though first fix was delayed
by the weather during the
wettest summer on record,
once the development was out
of the ground, we were
really pleased with the
speed of the build. The
weatherproof SIPS envelope
meant that work could
continue, no matter what.”
Garry Dyke, Palgrave Brown’s
national product manager for
the SIPS system, explains,
“On this project the
customer really received the
benefit of the integrated
building system offered by
Palgrave Brown. We were able
to deliver each
precision-designed element
of the SIPS system and other
timber products at exactly
the right time for the whole
of the build, meaning that
delays were minimised.”
What’s more, the exceptional
air tightness and high
thermal performance of the
SIPS system means that the
developer had no worries
about Part L compliance. “We
were particularly impressed
with how easily the
components slotted
together,” comments Scott
Pinnick. “The precision of
the engineering made
airtight installation really
straightforward.”
In fact, Wheatshield is so
pleased with the SIPS system
that it has now placed an
order to use the system for
another 14 dwellings in a
high-spec development
overlooking Southampton
Water. That’s real southern
exposure!

OPENS UP CHOICES WITH DOORS
Palgrave Brown, the £62million engineered timber specialist, now offers a range of high performance external doors to provide over 500 different options and combinations, all contained in a full colour brochure.
The best-selling line-up of the robust Scotdoor and Timedor timber doors has now been joined by the GRP range which offers state of the art, fully finished fibreglass door systems.
The Timedor models are a 44mm blank, and now include routered designs that were previously only available within the 60mm Scotdoor range. Developed to meet market demand, the 12 latest Timedor routered models are available in bespoke sizes and, like all Palgrave Brown doors, are scaled to fit different sizes so the integrity of the design proportions is not affected. Competitively priced, the routered designs include two solid door options and a variety of glazing configurations to complement all types of property designs.
The GRP range offers advanced performance and low maintenance in a range of fully finished composite door sets, including frames, handles, letter plates, locks and thresholds. Each door has a wood grained effect finish, but actually has a 2mm thick thermoset resin GRP skin with a through colour for low maintenance eliminating the need for re-coating with a longer lasting colour. Hard wearing, the GRP doors also have a high thermal efficiency, with a 100% CFC-free polyurethane insulating core. The technology used is the most environmentally friendly system available providing an ODP score of zero and a GWP score of less than five.
Within the Palgrave Brown Doors range, there’s a wide choice of styles and glazing options. The colour choice options for timber doors include red, blue, white, green or in stains of mahogany, light oak or teak as standard, while the GRP range also includes a solid black finish. Subject to minimum order quantities timber finishes are available in any BS / RAL Colour.
All Palgrave Brown doors meet PAS 23/24 requirements, Secured by Design standards and are Parts M and L compliant, meeting the latest Building Regulations requirements. There are also performance guarantees of up to 10 years, against glazing system failure, manufacturing defects, coatings warranty and ironmongery. With an environmentally friendly policy all the softwood and hardwood used in both Scotdoor and Timedor products comes from sustainable timber sources, which also helps in gaining Code for Sustainable Homes credits.

BREAKS THE MOULD WITH SILKTRIM
Palgrave Brown, the UK’s
leading engineered timber
specialist, is also a leader
in the MDF mouldings market,
with the company’s Silktrim-branded
MDF mouldings a firm
favourite with housebuilders
across the UK, delivering
the very highest quality
while remaining
competitively priced.
The Silktrim range is
manufactured from moisture
resistant, primed MDF, ready
for paint finishing. It’s
fast and easy to install and
because it’s pre-primed,
there’s no down-time waiting
for primers to dry – just
fit, paint and the job’s
complete, with a smooth
blemish-free finish.
The newest product in
Palgrave Brown’s mouldings
range is the industry’s
first collection of MDF fire
check door casings with
concealed fixings. Awarded
official fire check
certification following
rigorous tests using fire
doors from three main door
manufacturers, Silktrim’s
two-part MDF fire check door
casings have an innovative
design which gives a
completely clean finish,
explains Michael Parkinson,
national product manager.
“The two part system has a
double groove specification
which makes it possible to
glue rather than screw or
nail the door stop. This
means that when the casings
are painted there are no
visible signs of fixings,”
he says.
The Silktrim range also
offers impressive
environmental performance,
with Forest Stewardship
Council (FSC) Chain of
Custody (CoC) certification,
assuring customers that it
uses wood from FSC certified
forests.
Mike Fleming, sales and
marketing director at
Palgrave Brown comments, “A
lot of our customers have
very strict ‘green policies’
and we recognise our
responsibility to them and
consider environmental
aspects in all decision
making. At our manufacturing
sites we even use an
eco-friendly boiler system
fired by waste timber.”

CONSCIOUS CONSERVATION WITH PALGRAVE BROWN
Palgrave Brown, the £66
million UK timber
engineering company, has
been helping Attridge
Developments to add the
finishing touches to a
12-month development of a
local landmark in the centre
of Market Harborough in
Leicestershire.
The development will see the
former Symington Coffee
Mills Factory converted into
four-storey upmarket
apartments with an
additional further
conversion of three regency
town houses into six duplex
luxury apartments. And, as
the building has local
historical significance and
merit within the town, the
local authority conservation
officer has been taking a
keen interest in the
redevelopment of the site.
Providing the internal
staircases, Palgrave Brown
has had to work closely with
Attridge Developments in
order to ensure that any
spindles and handrails
replicate the original look
of the industrial building.
Jeff Gaught, area sales
manager at Palgrave Brown,
said, “Because of the
historical significance of
the building, it was
essential that any internal
fixtures and fittings were
produced as closely to the
original as possible.”
Providing the staircase for
the factory site meant
Attridge had to remove any
existing spindles and rails
in order to provide Palgrave
Brown with a sample from
which to work the design.
Using the joinery centre at
Marchington the new timber
was machined into the
correct shape and size in
order to satisfy the
requirements of the
conservation officer.
Jeff continued, “Modern day
spindles and handrails are
usually turned and shaped
and fairly intricate. To
fit in with the necessary
industrial design, we needed
to provide a more minimalist
and pure feel, with straight
spindles and cleanly
designed handrails. In
addition the size and fit of
the staircases needed to fit
exactly into the spaces
previously occupied by the
original destroyed by years
of neglect. Intricate
measurement and design was
needed to ensure that the
new staircases matched the
exact tolerances to fit into
the existing apertures of
the stairwells.”
Along with careful
consideration of internal
fixtures and fittings,
expert consultations were
necessary to restore the
outside façade as closely as
possible to the Nineteenth
Century original. This
involved careful
examinations of early plans
and pictures alongside
consideration of
architectural and historical
reports of the approximately
two-acre site.
Tom McInerney, general
manager of Attridge
Developments said, “This
was an exciting project to
work on taking into
consideration the historical
significance and
architectural appreciation
of the site. Working closely
with our partners and with
the assistance of the local
authority conservation
officer, we have
successfully combined the
heritage of the site with
all the benefits of modern
day living while restoring a
Grade II listed building
into apartments that are
faithful to the regency
period.”
To produce the stairwells a
period of consultation was
needed including site visits
to examine what remained of
the existing staircases and
to obtain exact measurement
and design details. “We have
worked with Palgrave Brown
before and were confident
that the bespoke timber
stairwell designs would be
furnished exactly to what we
needed and of a high
quality.”
The apartments were
completed in spring 2007.

08/05/2007 - PALGRAVE BROWN'S
ECOHOMES SUPPORT SERVICE GAINS
GREEN POINTS
Palgrave Brown, the UK’s leading
supplier of high performance
engineered timber, is helping
a Taylor Woodrow project to
gain valuable EcoHomes credits
with its EcoHomes assessment
support service.
When Taylor Woodrow (under the
Bryant Homes brand) was awarded
the English Partnerships tender
for a sensitive development
of over 800 houses on the site
of a former hospital in Hampshire,
an eco-friendly approach was
essential, because of the landowning
Government’s strict environmental
criteria.
Situated on the edge of Basingstoke,
Park Prewett was built nearly
a century ago and today forms
part of the Hospital Sites Programme
portfolio. The architect specified
Western Red Cedar cladding for
the houses and planning permission
was granted on this basis.
Palgrave Brown was awarded the
contract to provide cedar panels,
but as the site was subject
to the requirements of English
Partnerships, the timber supplier’s
EcoHomes assessment support
service offered to review the
specification. The service identified
that Western Red Cedar rates
poorly on the environmental
impact of materials because
of the distance it travels,
and this enabled Palgrave Brown
to offer Taylor Woodrow an alternative
solution that would also be
well received by English Partnerships.
The EcoHomes assessment support
service suggested PlatoWood
as an alternative – a heat-treated
European softwood that compares
to Western Red Cedar in terms
of durability, class and aesthetics,
but at a lower cost. Contrary
to popular perception and to
the expectations of Taylor Woodrow,
Palgrave Brown’s greener solution
is actually cheaper, delivering
both significant savings and
an improved environmental rating.
Andy Warren, key account manager
at Palgrave Brown, explains,
“Our EcoHomes assessment support
service has really paid dividends
for Taylor Woodrow. We don’t
just think about chain of custody,
we also consider the environmental
impact of materials, which in
fact carries more weight under
EcoHomes than responsible sourcing.
PlatoWood scores on all fronts
with a higher rating for environmental
impact, FSC chain of custody
to prove responsible sourcing
and substantial cost benefits.”
For the Park Prewett development,
PlatoWood timber panels varying
in size from 1m x 1m up to 3m
x 3m consisting of tongue and
grooved boards framed by a mortice
and tennon construction frame
are bespoke produced.
Palgrave Brown is also supplying
floors, roofs and doors for
the Park Prewett development
and deliveries of all products
are scheduled on an ‘as required’
basis for the customer’s convenience
to minimise stock held on site.
Palgrave Brown's EcoHomes Assessment
Support Service suggested PlatoWood
cladding for a high environmental
rating.

03/04/2007 - PALGRAVE BROWN
GOES GREEN WITH PLATO®WOOD
Palgrave Brown, the UK’s £66
million leading engineered timber
specialist, is making it easier
than ever for housebuilders
to gain EcoHomes points with
the introduction of Plato®Wood,
a heat-treated timber product
range with reduced environmental
impact.
Plato®Wood is a thermo-modified
timber that combines durability,
stability and aesthetics. The
range of products is ‘A’ rated
in BRE’s Green Guide to Housing
Specification and includes cladding,
decking and structural timbers,
so there’s flexibility in where
to specify this sustainably-produced
timber.
With the current trend for timber
cladding, there’s a danger of
compromising environmental credentials,
explains Andy Warren, key account
manager at Palgrave Brown. “Western
Red Cedar cladding, for example,
is not only expensive due to
the recent spike in timber prices,
but it also fails to qualify
for EcoHomes credits, because
of the distance travelled by
imported Canadian cedar.
“In line with Palgrave Brown’s
policy of helping housebuilders
to comply with environmental
legislation, Plato®Wood ticks
all the boxes for sustainable
timber solutions. It offers
a range of practical options
to make earning EcoHomes points
straightforward,” he continues.
Plato®Wood has undergone a natural
heat treatment process which
takes less durable softwood
or hardwood and improves its
durability and dimensional stability.
There is no loss of flexibility,
which can often result from
traditional heat treatments,
as it retains a higher cellulose
content due to a carefully-managed
five-stage process.
Produced in Europe, Plato®Wood
timber products are FSC certified,
use no chemicals in production
and even incorporate environmentally-friendly
sourcing of the electricity
and steam used in the production
process. They are suitable for
ground and water contact and
come with a 15 year guarantee.
Palgrave Brown has the engineered
timber industry’s widest and
most comprehensive product portfolio,
including roof trusses, MDF
mouldings, stairs, and doors,
as well as being a distributor
for the i-Level Silent Floor
System.
Plato®Wood products can be ordered
through Palgrave Brown’s 18
site national network.

ticks all the boxes for sustainable
timber solutions.

11/09/2006 - THE COMPLETE TIMBER
BUILDING SOLUTION - PALGRAVE
BROWN ADDS KINGSPAN TO ITS RANGE
Palgrave Brown, the leading
engineered timber specialist
and suppliers of the complete
set of timber components for
house builders, has expanded
its range with the introduction
of Kingspan TEK Building Systems.
One of the first customers was
Wiltshire based, K C Property
Developments. There was a tight
lead-time on the development
and because Palgrave Brown was
able to supply the complete
timber components, it made the
build far quicker and simpler.
The project includes virtually
the complete suite of products
from Palgrave Brown as well
as the Kingspan TEK panels,
internal load bearing and non
load bearing timber frame panels,
i-Level Trus Joist™ Silent Floor
® system, Puhos Weatherdek 2
chipboard flooring system and
a Mitek trussed rafter system.
Graham Collins, director, at
K C Property Developments, said,
“This was the first time I had
worked with Palgrave Brown and
I can’t fault the service they
provide. From first contact
to completion we have worked
extremely well together and
all our supply needs were met
very quickly. The service provided
with the use of many of its
product suite was especially
straight forward with the single
point of contact for all products
making the build and product
supply very simple.”
When using Kingspan TEK building
systems, a registered contractor,
approved by Kingspan is needed
to install the panels. Following
recommendation from the contractor,
K C Property Developments sent
through a set of build plans
to Palgrave Brown who arranged
to supply the panels.
Garry Dyke, national product
manager (Kingspan TEK and I-beams)
said, “Supplying the panels
for the first time, designing
and engineering them to match
the requirements of the build
went extremely well. Kingspan
TEK building systems fits perfectly
into the Palgrave Brown portfolio
of products, allowing our customers
to purchase all their timber
requirements, from the structural
Kingspan TEK panels to internal
MDF Silktrim mouldings from
one point of contact.” Mr Collins
continued, “For this particular
build we wanted to do something
a little bit different and Kingspan
TEK allowed us to do that. It
is a highly innovative product
plus it is extremely quick to
build. Palgrave Brown supplied
the panels within a very short
lead time, our build span was
just ten weeks from order with
three weeks from supply through
to completion of the main timber
frame, roofing system and internal
stud work.”
The panels are being supplied
to create two, two bedroom flats
in Corsham, Wiltshire, on an
11 metre by 27-metre site. Built
in consistency with the design
of the local area, K C Development
chose the Kingspan TEK building
system for its versatility and
energy saving ability.

29/06/2006 - PALGRAVE BROWN
EXPERTISE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF
Palgrave Brown, the £62 million
leading engineered timber specialist
has won its largest ever, single
site contract to provide roof
trusses, TJI beams and staircases,
for The Hamptons, a prestigious
new housing development at Worcester
Park Surrey.
Half an hour’s drive from the
centre of London, 2005’s Housebuilder
of the Year developer, the St
James Group, is transforming
the 60-acre former Worcester
Park Sewage Treatment Works
into a mixed development that
includes 30 acres of grassland
and wildlife habitats, alongside
housing and community, business
centre and leisure facilities.
The 480 homes are being built
within a carefully designed
parkland setting to a high specification,
using materials and techniques
that meet St James’ criteria
for sustainable development
by making the most efficient
use of natural resources. Through
strong partnership relationships
with local authorities and housing
associations, St James Homes
is also recognised as being
at the forefront of the industry
in terms of policies on transport,
energy, waste, ecology and landscape.
Palgrave Brown also have a strong
environmental / sustainability
policy and were able to offer
PEFC and FSC certification on
products supplied in line with
government requirements for
EcoHomes and a proven background
on prestigious house builds
plus design and manufacture
excellence centres.
For phase two of the development,
Palgrave Brown was initially
selected to provide the roof
trusses for the 133 town houses
and flats but the extensive
range of products and technical
knowledge shown were later selected
to supply TJI joists and high
specification staircases.
Les Smithers, sales manager
for the southern region said,
“We developed an excellent relationship
with the St James Group team
and it was a privilege to be
involved in such a prestigious
project, particularly to assist
in the design of mansard roofs,
which are not commonly seen.
Partnering has undoubtedly been
the key to this project not
only within our own company
but also within the St. James
Group where our relationship
with its team has flourished.”
The 133 town houses and flats,
is designed in both traditional
build and in a New England Shaker
style with Mansard roofs and
weather-boarded exterior cladding.
Mansard roofs were named after
the French architect François
Mansart (1598 – 1666) and can
be found in many French styles
including second Empire and
Romanesque. The Mansard roof
style has two slopes, the lower
almost vertical to allow extra
roof space for the attic rooms.
The lower roof can have a straight,
convex or concave shape.
The Hamptons include one and
two bedroom apartments and four
to six bedroom houses with prices
ranging from £305,000 for an
apartment - £380,000 for a four-bedroom
house. For more information

it is our intention to continue
these certification processes,
it is expected that CoC certification
on all of our timber will be
realised in the near future.
Through this, we aim to keep
our customers ahead in the sustainability
stakes and ensure that we can
keep them aware of the many
Building Regulations that are
continually being updated. FSC
and PEFC certification forms
of identification on our products
also mean verification for the
customers could not be easier.”
PEFC certification assures customers
that Palgrave Brown’s TJI flooring
systems and Weatherdek flooring
originate from sustainably managed
forests. FSC CoC certification
also guarantees that Allan Brothers
windows use wood that comes
from FSC certified forests and
CoC ensures that the timber
used can be tracked through
every stage in the supply chain
from the forest to the final

OPENS UP CHOICES IN DOORS
Palgrave Brown, the £62million
engineered timber specialist,
has expanded its high performance
range of external doors to provide
over 500 different options and
combinations, all contained
in a new full colour brochure.
Joining the established line-up
of the robust Scotdoor and Timedor
timber doors are 12 new designs
within the Timedor collection
plus the introduction of the
GRP range which offers state
of the art, fully finished fibreglass
door systems.
The Timedor models are a 44mm
blank, and can now introduce
new routered designs that were
previously only available within
the 60mm Scotdoor range. Developed
to meet market demand, the 12
new Timedor routered models
are available in bespoke sizes
and, like all Palgrave Brown
doors, will be scaled to fit
different sizes so the integrity
of the design proportions is
not affected. Competitively
priced, the new routered designs
include two solid door options
and a variety of glazing configurations
to appeal to all types of property
designs.
The new GRP range offers advanced
performance and low maintenance
in a range of fully finished
composite door sets, including
frames, handles, letter plates,
locks and thresholds. Each door
has a wood grained effect finish,
but actually has a 2mm thick
thermoset resin GRP skin with
a through colour for low maintenance
eliminating the need for re-coating
with a longer lasting colour.
Hard wearing, the GRP doors
also have a high thermal efficiency,
with a 100% CFC-free polyurethane
insulating core. The technology
used is the most environmentally
friendly system available providing
an ODP score of zero and a GWP
score of less than five.
Within the Palgrave Brown Doors
range, there’s a wide choice
of styles and glazing options.
The colour choice options for
timber doors include red, blue,
white, green or in stains of
mahogany, light oak or teak,
while the GRP range also includes
a solid black finish.
All Palgrave Brown doors meet
PAS 23/24 requirements, Secured
by Design standards and are
Parts M and L compliant, meeting
the latest Building Regulations
requirements. There are also
performance guarantees of up
to 10 years, against glazing
system failure, manufacturing
defects, coatings warranty and
ironmongery. With an environmentally
friendly policy all the softwood
and hardwood used in both Scotdoor
and Timedor products comes from
sustainable timber sources,
which also helps in gaining
EcoHomes credits.

31/05/2006 - PALGRAVE BROWN'S
ASSIST IN SELF-SUPPORTING CYBER
SPACE
Palgrave Brown has supplied
the roof trusses for the self-supporting
roof of the Cyber Centre, a
landmark building at the heart
of a major redevelopment project
in London.
The £46 million, four-year redevelopment
project on the Beaumont Estate,
Leyton in the London Borough
of Waltham Forest, will create
attractive neighbourhoods, new
community facilities and a choice
of high quality accommodation
with 306 new build and 300 refurbished
homes. The scheme is also securing
employment and training opportunities
for local residents.
The contractors for the development
are JLP with Forest Homes that
is a subsidiary London and Quadrant
Housing Trust, PRP Architects,
EC Harris, engineering consultants,
Glanville Consulting and the
Tenants’ Association being key
partners in the transformation
of this community. At
its heart the Cyber Centre is
the prime feature of this development
and will provide full IT and
computer training facilities
for community use together with
new apartments on the first,
second and third floors.
The unusual circular design
of the upper floors of the Cyber
Centre assures its recognition
and landmark status within the
scheme. But, in addition
the roofing system is particularly
intricate as it is designed
to be entirely self-supporting
to facilitate a light well to
the upper floor accommodation.
Usually a roof design will involve
several roof trusses that span
the entire width of a building,
but Palgrave Brown were required
to provide the design for a
series of separate trusses that
connect to an integral ring
beam that supports the roof
without the need for any additional
internal support.
Chosen Project Partners for
the JCT 98 contract for the
redevelopment, and affordable
housing specialist, JLP knew
that meticulous design and across
the board communication would
be of paramount importance in
this development, so they approached
the UK’s leading £62 million
timber engineering company and
member of the Trussed Rafter
Association (TRA), Palgrave
Brown to provide a complete
range of timber products, excluding
staircases, for the ‘Cyber Centre’
building. Palgrave Brown
also had the added benefit of
being able to demonstrate PEFC
and FSC certification on many
of the supplied products.
The circular building has a
12.2 metre diameter and internally
is entirely constructed of timber
including internal load bearing
timber stud walls, roof trusses,
skirting and architraves, all
of which were supplied by Palgrave
Brown.
Steve Meacham, roof designer
at Palgrave Brown said: “This
project was highly technical
and because of the self supporting
nature of the build we had to
ensure that the trusses were
fully supported until all the
structural elements were securely
fitted to the Glulam Rings I
have never seen anything like
this design as far as the self-supporting
ideal. Taking into account
the complex nature of the build
and construction it was essential
that we worked closely with
all partners to achieve its
success.
Palgrave Brown also designed
the flooring system for the
centre. Alan Mirams, floor
designer at Palgrave Brown supplied
drawings and technical information
to both JLP and its engineering
company Glanville. “The
circular shape of the floor
created a ‘spoke wheel’ design
that required individually tailor-made
and measured truss-joists.
Each of the designed ‘spokes’
also required individually angled
connectors, designed and supplied
by Simpson Strong Tie.
The complex and intricate nature
of the design meant daily contact
was essential during the entire
build from the design to manufacture
and finally through to the fitting
stage,” explained Alan.

Paul Gulliver, senior development
manager at JLP said, “The
cyber centre is very much a
landmark part of the scheme
as it will be a community facility
for residents providing valuable
IT skills and development training.
In terms of build, the circular
and self-supporting ideal of
the building meant that it would
be particularly complex and
challenging. Palgrave
Brown’s expertise has been invaluable
in being able to realise the
ambitious design concept.

20/04/2006 - PALGRAVE BROWN'S
POSI-TIVE EXPANSION
Palgrave Brown, the UK’s £62
million leading engineered timber
specialist, is meeting growing
demand for open web flooring
systems with its latest investment
of £100,000 in two specialist
manufacturing sites within the
company’s 19 site national network.
Two new Mitek Posi Strut Runner
machines have now been installed
at Palgrave Brown’s Yeovil and
Widnes branches to boost the
existing production capacity.
The sales and design support
has also been strengthened as
part of this latest investment
phase with new Posi-Joist designers
at each site and a new sales
and central design office at
Nuneaton.
These recent advances represent phase two of a planned rapid development programme
for Palgrave Brown’s Posi-Joist
division, which started with
an investment in Yeovil in 2004,
establishing the company’s first
dedicated production site.
Customer demand for Posi-Joist has grown ahead of forecasts, as housebuilders
and developers benefit from
a two week lead time and totally
integrated flooring and roofing
solutions, saving time and hassle
on site, says Dave Atkins, Palgrave
Brown’s national product manager
for Posi-Joists.
“The addition of a flooring department within each of our roof truss operations
is proving invaluable as the
synergies are fantastic.
We use the same design software,
the same hardware, design and
estimating resource for both
product ranges.
The two manufacturing sites,
which can offer complete floor
and roof solutions that can
be sold, designed and delivered
from one location, will potentially
provide a cost saving to customers,
as well as guaranteeing excellent
service on time, every time.”
The Posi-Joist system is the
latest generation of flooring
systems within the building
industry and combines timber
and Posi Strut steel web that
allows for a span of far greater
distances while allowing a variety
of internal room layouts within
an external shell. The
open web design also provides
concealed piping for contractors,
without the need for sawing
gaps, as in traditional flooring
methods. The design, size
and flexibility of the Posi-Joist
system means that it can also
be used to span flat and pitched
roofs.
Palgrave Brown has the engineered
timber industry’s widest and
most comprehensive product portfolio,
including roof trusses, MDF
mouldings, stairs, doors and
Allan Brothers windows, as well
as being a Master Dealer for
the TJI Silent Floor System.

07/04/2006 - RICH IN LOYALTY
AT PALGRAVE BROWN
Palgrave Brown, the leading
£62 million national timber
engineering company has been
rewarding the loyalty of its
staff and their services to
the company within its Pen Mill
Trading Estate, Yeovil branch.
With 19 branches across the
UK and over 800 members of staff,
Palgrave Brown, is a leading
national supplier of timber
products to the building industry.
The Yeovil branch has a 60 strong
number of employees and at a
recent ceremony, honoured two
members of the team with a 40-year
service award going to Mike
Sproston and a retirement award
for Robin Taylor.
A local Yeovil man, Mike Sproston
has been at the Yeovil site
for 40 years and has seen a
number of changes that have
happened over that time, from
starting out as Yeovil Timber,
to Hunter Timber, John Mansfield
and finally Palgrave Brown.
Mr Sproston said, “I started
out as a sales representative
for the company and was involved
in the early steady progress
of the business to the success
that the site enjoys today under
Palgrave Brown. I reallypoy
working with such a progressive
company and although the senior
years are upon me, it makes
me feel younger as the company
is constantly evolving and purchasing
new, up-to-the-minute technology
and machinery. There is
always something different happening.”
Despite formally retiring, Robin
Taylor from Wimborne decided
he didn’t quite want to leave
the ranks and now works at the
Yeovil branch on a part-time
consultancy basis. Mr
Taylor says, “Palgrave Brown
is a great place to work.
I have worked in the timber
/ truss business since the early
70’s and Palgrave Brown is an
extremely dynamic company.
I had the opportunity to stay
working on a consultancy basis
and just couldn’t turn it down,
even though it means spending
less time on my car kits and
on the motor racing circuits!”
Palgrave Brown’s Yeovil branch
has also recently extended its
expertise by moving into design
and manufacture of the Posi-Joist
flooring system. This
has seen an investment of approximately
£60,000 into the branch

24/03/2006 - OVERALL SUCCESS
FOR PALGRAVE BROWN
Taylor Woodrow’s annual Supplier
Awards for 2006 announced the
UK’s leading £62 million timber
engineering company, Palgrave
Brown, as Overall Winner and
Best Performer in the Supplier/Merchant
category.
Taylor Woodrow first introduced
the awards in 2004. They
were originally designed to
reward and recognise those suppliers
who most enhance Taylor Woodrow’s
reputation and overall business
performance through greater
value, simplicity and reliability.
Andy Warren, key accounts manager
for Palgrave Brown (UK) Limited,
said, “We are delighted to have
been honoured with both Best
Supplier and Overall Winner
by Taylor Woodrow. With
19 sites, Palgrave Brown supplies
its entire product range nationwide
to Taylor Woodrow, which has
very rigorous, objective and
consistent performance indicators.
It is therefore an excellent
endorsement of our complete
‘on time, every time’ reputation
to be recognised in this way.”
Palgrave Brown was approached
by Taylor Woodrow and asked
to submit a written application
demonstrating how its services
and supply meet the criteria
required by Taylor Woodrow.
Andy Warren continued, “Each
aspect of the business across
the complete range of timber
was examined, from pricing,
lead times and distribution
patterns to innovation and quality.
It was an in-depth analysis
into the way we handle customer
orders. We had to show
exactly how we fitted into each
category and provide evidence
to support our claims.
The whole process was an excellent
way to really examine our procedures
and find better and more efficient
service to both Taylor Woodrow
and all of our other customers.”
Palgrave Brown was also congratulated
on its continuous improvement
and was particularly recognised
for the EcoHomes facility on
its website, which allows customers
to easily assess how they could
obtain EcoHomes credits through
the use of timber. Also
highlighted was its policy of
PEFC and FSC certification on
a number of its products.

24/03/2006 - PALGRAVE BROWN
PROVIDES A SOLID BASE FOR EDEN
EDUCATION
Environmental and sustainability
concerns were of prime importance
when Palgrave Brown was asked
to design the flooring systems
for the new £15 million education
centre at the Eden Project in
St Austell Cornwall. Funded
by the Millennium Commission
Lottery fund, and as part of
the ongoing development of this
project, the education centre,
named The Core, has taken two
years to construct and is the
first of its kind in the world.
The project is one of the top
five ‘paid-for’ visitor attractions
in the UK bringing in an additional
half a billion pounds into the
local and regional economy since
opening in 2001 and attracting
around 1.25 million visitors
a year. The Core is an
inspirational addition to the
project, offering new events,
exhibitions and a learning base.
The design of The Core is based
on Fibonacci spirals, a pattern
found in many natural forms
including seeds of a sunflower
head, pine cones and snail shells
and is a fundamental rule of
how plants grow. The exquisitely
designed and unusual, dome-shaped
building’s construction was
down to leading contractors,
McAlpine JV who then approached
the UK’s leading engineered
timber specialist, Palgrave
Brown, to design and manufacture
the flooring system for the
three-storey building. The Eden project aims to create
an organisation that works for
environmental, economic and
social health at a local through
to national and international
level. So, it was essential
that only environmentally sourced
timber be used in this primarily
timber construction. Palgrave
Brown was able to provide evidence
and FSC and PEFC certification
to demonstrate that all government
requirements for environmentally
sourced timber would be used
for the flooring system.
Palgrave Brown has been involved
with the project from the early
stages of planning and Martin
Hallam, designer and estimator
for Palgrave Brown, Bodmin branch
explained: “This is a
completely unique project, the
layout of the Education Centre
wasn’t exactly standard but
instead consisted of circular,
curved edges. From working
plans provided by McAlpine JV
and various site meetings we
realised that each Posi-floor
joist would need to be individual
and made to fit for each section
of the construction with the
added options of trimable ends
so that the joists could be
cut to size on site.”
The Posi-joists supplied to
McAlpine JV ranged in length
from 600mm to 4.8 metres and
once the design and manufacture
was complete, the Palgrave Brown
team worked in close partnership
with the McAlpine JV team to
answer any queries that arose
to ensure a smooth, successful
installation of the joists.
Mr Hallam continued; “It was
very exciting to be asked to
work on such a momentous
project. It was very
interesting while being
extremely complex and
challenging in design.
The final result, now all
the joists have been
supplied and construction is
complete, is far better than
I could have ever
anticipated.”
The Core, by its very nature, is a model of sustainability utilising
local suppliers and
sustainable materials.
It was therefore of
paramount importance that
both Palgrave Brown and
McAlpine JV worked closely
together to ensure that the
stringent requirements were
met, a partnership that was
highly successful.
John Richardson from
McAlpine JV said "Palgrave
Brown worked closely with
ourselves and our design
team in order to meet the
detailed and unusual
requirements specified by
the Eden project. The great
benefit for JV and Palgrave
Brown was the branch
locations - close to the
project and a very local
supplier."

24/03/2006 - FURTHER EXPANSION
AS PALGRAVE BROWN ACQUIRES SOUTH
RIBBLE TIMBER
Palgrave Brown, the UK’s leading
timber engineering company,
is on the expansion trail again
with the acquisition of the
South Ribble Timber business
from Carvers Building Supplies.
As part of its ongoing growth
strategy and because of the
synergy of products, Palgrave
Brown has bought the goodwill
and current stock at South Ribble
Timber for an undisclosed sum.
The acquisition is set to boost
the company’s £62million turnover
by an additional £1.5million.
Alan Fillingham, timber trading
director at Palgrave Brown,
said: “This acquisition
is a win win for everyone concerned
and will mean that we can continue
to expand our business and customer
base. Previous customers
of South Ribble Timber can also
be confident of Palgrave Brown’s
high standards of service and
national support network while
being assured of continuity
throughout this acquisition
process.”
Palgrave Brown has a long established
reputation not only nationally
but also within the local Lancashire
area, the base for many of South
Ribble’s customers.
The South Ribble timber-manufacturing
site has been closed and customer
orders are now being fulfilled

18/05/2005 - PALGRAVE BROWN
LAUNCHES FIRST MDF FIRE CHECK
DOOR CASINGS
Palgrave Brown, the UK’s leading
timber engineering specialist,
has launched the industry’s
first range of MDF fire check
door casings. Awarded with official
fire check certification, Silktrim’s
two-part MDF fire check door
casings also feature an innovative
design that results in a completely
clean finish.
Medium Density Fibreboard was
previously considered unsuitable
for use with fire doors, but
Silktrim’s advanced two-part
MDF fire check door casings
have been thoroughly tested
to the highest standards.
“We tested the new casings using
fire doors from three main door
manufacturers and were awarded
official fire check certification,”
says Peter Coombes, key account
manager for Palgrave Brown.
“Plus, the two part system uses
an innovative double groove
specification, which makes it
possible to glue rather than
screw or nail the joins. This
means that when the casings
are painted there is no visible
sign of fixings.”
Silktrim’s consistent high quality
means there’s also no need for
sanding or undercoating and
with care, the mouldings will
only need one topcoat of paint.
The elimination of defects such
as knots and warping also ensures
that Silktrim mouldings never
end up in the ‘reject’ pile.
Distributed from Brinscall nationally,
Silktrim MDF mouldings are spiral
wrapped, offering protection
during transit and on site.

13/05/2005 - PALGRAVE BROWN'S
NEW STRATEGY FOR SUCCESS
Taylor Woodrow’s annual Supplier
Awards for 2006 announced the
UK’s leading £62 million timber
engineering company, Palgrave
Brown, as Overall Winner and
Best Performer in the Supplier/Merchant
category.
Taylor Woodrow first introduced the awards in 2004. They were originally
designed to reward and recognise
those suppliers who most enhance
Taylor Woodrow’s reputation
and overall business performance
through greater value, simplicity
and reliability.
Andy Warren, key accounts manager
for Palgrave Brown (UK) Limited,
said, “We are delighted to have
been honoured with both Best
Supplier and Overall Winner
by Taylor Woodrow. With
19 sites, Palgrave Brown supplies
its entire product range nationwide
to Taylor Woodrow, which has
very rigorous, objective and
consistent performance indicators.
It is therefore an excellent
endorsement of our complete
‘on time, every time’ reputation
to be recognised in this way.”
Palgrave Brown was approached by Taylor Woodrow and asked to submit a written
application demonstrating how
its services and supply meet
the criteria required by Taylor
Woodrow. Andy Warren continued,
“Each aspect of the business
across the complete range of
timber was examined, from pricing,
lead times and distribution
patterns to innovation and quality.
It was an in-depth analysis
into the way we handle customer
orders. We had to show
exactly how we fitted into each
category and provide evidence
to support our claims.
The whole process was an excellent
way to really examine our procedures
and find better and more efficient
service to both Taylor Woodrow
and all of our other customers.”
Palgrave Brown was also congratulated
on its continuous improvement
and was particularly recognised
for the EcoHomes facility on
its website, which allows customers
to easily assess how they could
obtain EcoHomes credits through
the use of timber. Also
highlighted was its policy of
PEFC and FSC certification on
a number of its products.

WINS MAJOR INDUSTRY AWARD
Palgrave Brown the £65m engineered
timber specialist has won a
regional award in the McCarthy
& Stone Supplier of the Year
Awards 2004, one of the most
recognised award schemes in
the construction industry.
As a regional winner Palgrave
Brown will be nominated for
the McCarthy & Stone National
Awards to be held on the 24th
May 2005.
The Company’s Avonmouth branch
scooped the award after supplying
McCarthy & Stone with specially

of its sites in the Western
region.
Commenting on the award, Ed
Wilkes, Avonmouth branch manager
says: “The relationship we have
with McCarthy & Stone is incredibly
important to us and recognition
in this manner is a fantastic

fast track manufacturing to
fulfil very short lead times.”

Brown’s 17 sites, which together
supply a large range of timber

05/04/2005 - PALGRAVE BROWN
PLAYS ROLE IN NEW HOLLYWOOD
BLOCKBUSTER
Hollywood’s Matthew McConaughey
and Penelope Cruz may be the
stars of Sahara, the new blockbuster
that hits the big screen on
April 8, but £62m engineered
timber specialist Palgrave Brown
also had an important role to
play in the film’s production.
When the company was approached
to supply 80 extra long I beams
to build a helicopter landing
pad and solar burn tower to
be used in some of the film’s
action packed stunt scenes,
the team at Palgrave Brown rose
to the challenge.
James Chanceong, director of
John Mansfield Timber Supplies,
which is based at Pinewood and
Shepperton Studios, says: “Our
client wanted a cantilever system
and they needed a platform with
the strength to support a ten
foot overhang, giving the impression
that it was free standing. For
this, we went to Palgrave Brown
who I knew could supply the
products and meet the tight
deadlines that are so often
required by film studios.”
The extra long joists supplied
for Sahara are more commonly
used for the TJI Silent Floor
System, designed and supplied
by Palgrave Brown. The joists
are ‘non-residential’ series,
and have a depth of 406mm as
opposed to the ‘residential’
joists that have a general depth
of 241mm or 302mm.
Alan Mirams, design office
manager for Palgrave Brown explains,
“The residential TJI joists
are usually used to give a stronger,
more cost effective alternative
to a Traditional Timber floor
or roofing system. TJI joists
are considerably stronger than
traditional sawn carcassing
of a similar depth. They are
also extremely lightweight,
giving our customers an easy
to install, lightweight flooring
system, with fewer components
and guaranteed performance.”
Available in lengths of up to
15m, the Silent Floor System
allows rapid installation on
site, helping to minimise labour
costs and the potential for
injury.
Filming for ‘Sahara’, produced
by Sahara productions, commenced
in February 2004 in Morocco
and Shepperton Studios and was
released across UK cinemas on
8 April 2005.

02/04/2005 - COMMENTARY ON TRUSSED
RAFTER INDUSTRY FROM MIKE FLEMING,
SALES & MARKETING DIRECTOR
How is the industry performing?
The trussed rafter industry
is now considered ‘mature’ in
its supply of most timber roofs
built today. The ongoing developments
of the software supplied by
system providers and the new
plant and machinery available
has enabled trussed rafters
to remain the first choice for
flexibility in design and manufacture.
The ability to order different
plots, sometimes individually,
whilst keeping pace with the
ever-restrictive planning requirements
bestowed on most developers
ensure that the future remains
bright for most Trussed Rafter
Manufacturers.
What new advancements are
being made?
Well, there’s no room for complacency
and key issues still remain,
presenting the industry with
opportunities as well as threats.
With the demand for increased
square feet per dwelling footprint,
